Exploring Ancient Egypt

Description of Learning Unit:

In this unit, your child will become familiar with Ancient Egypt through exploring the geography, daily life, foods, and religion of this historic civilization. Your child will have fun creating sand paper art and helping you prepare a yummy meal of Egyptian beef and rice. Skills will be mastered through the use of hands-on activities, interactive lessons, mapping activities, games, coloring pages and videos. This pathway is designed to take approximately one week to complete, depending on how often you teach history. 

List of Objectives:

• Gain an appreciation for daily life in Ancient Egypt, including farming practices, importance of the Nile river, daily activities, and Egyptian food.
• Become familiar with the geography of Ancient Egypt.
• Discover how Egyptians kept up with time and learn a general timeline of events that occurred in Ancient Egypt.

Learn about many aspects of Egyptian geography through an adventure story and maps.

Hands-On Projects and Activities:

The Ancient Egyptians used the papyrus plant to make their own paper. In this craft, your child can make his/her own papyrus paper using a brown grocery bag. 

Prepare a yummy Egyptian beef and rice recipe with your child. Bear in mind that rice dates to Medieval times, and not Ancient Egypt, but the recipe should still be authentic enough to give your family a taste of life in Egypt! 

Camels played an important role in the everyday life of the Egyptians, both as a form of transportation and to help the people move heavy items from one place to another. In this activity, your child will make a camel using an egg carton. 

The Egyptian people are known for their beautiful drawings. Help your child create a replica of an Ancient Egyptian tomb painting. 

Crocodiles were very important to the Ancient Egyptians. They were prized by rich nobles and the temple priest and adorned with beautiful jewels. Some were free to room around the towns and temples. In this craft, your child will build his/her own crocodile. 

Learning Tools (worksheets, drills, printables, online games, tests, etc.):

Practice determining and entering map coordinates as you search Egypt for precious gems needed by the head jeweler.  

Print out an outline map of Egypt and have your child draw in the landmarks learned about in this unit. 

Practice putting various Egyptian artifacts in order according to the dates that they were made. 

Try this interactive activity to explore the different types of buildings commonly found in an Ancient Egyptian town. 

Print out and have your child color this picture of an Egyptian woman.
