Lesson Pathways is pleased to offer math guided journeys for grades K through 5. Each guided journey offers children the opportunity to not only study math topics, but also develop a firm grasp of each concept through lessons and hands-on activities. To round out the learning experience, math units also include a selection of worksheets, games, videos, and printable resources.
Year K Math begins with the basics of counting and comparing numbers. Counting is covered up to 20 and children begin to add and subtract. This year of math introduces telling time, recognizing money, and using graphs. Children are also introduced to shapes, measurements, and problem solving. Some of the most basic topics are covered primarily through hands-on activities rather than traditional lessons.
In Year 1 Math, children will build on their knowledge of working with numbers, counting to 100, measuring, and exploring zero and simple fractions. Children will also explore graphs, ordinals, counting with money, and telling time. Year 1 Math also covers topics such as place value, geometry, estimation, probability, and skip counting.
Year 2 Math gives students opportunity to further master skills developed in previous years while learning new math concepts. This year, children will count and work with numbers to 1,000. They will continue exploring place value, geometry, money, graphs, and telling time. They also will solve more challenging word problems and start practicing multiplication and division.
Year 3 Math continues to offer basic math concepts practice, while gradually introducing a variety of new concepts throughout the year. Children will continue to explore the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will try different methods of tackling math problems and attempt problems with progressively higher numbers. Children will continue to work with problem-solving, graphing, and tallying. Children will continue to study measurement and will also explore the faces, vertices, sides, and angles of geometric shapes. Year 3 Math provides more practice with fractions, including equivalent fractions, and introduces decimals.
Year 4 Math provides opportunities to strengthen math skills developed in previous years while also introducing new concepts, such as prime factoring. Children will review basic number, multiplication and division concepts and use them to perform more challenging calculations. Students will also hone their calculation skills by working on both mental and paper math. Children will continue comparing fractions and decimals and working through adding and subtracting them. They will also continue their study of time and measurement, reviewing important concepts and tackling more advanced problems. Students will also continue their study of shapes, lines, angles, area, and volume.
Year 5 Math continues to strengthen math skills developed in previous years while introducing new concepts. Children review basic number, multiplication, and division concepts and use them to perform more challenging calculations. Students will also hone their calculation skills by applying math skills to many different types of problems and activities. In Year 5 Math, children will also continue their study of fractions and decimals, working with steadily more complicated numbers. They will compare fractions and decimals and use them in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. Children with continue to study measurement, reviewing important concepts and tackling more advanced problems, including conversion problems. Students will also continue their study of geometry. Through both written and hands-on activities, they will gain not only knowledge of math rules and procedures, but also practical application skills.
