Letter B - Butterflies

Description of Learning Unit:

In this unit, your child will learn to recognize the letter B through games, online activities, crafts, and movement activities. Your child will add to the alphabet book this week by adding pictures of butterflies and other items that begin with the letter B. The theme for this week is butterflies, and your child will play games and make a butterfly craft to help reinforce that butterfly starts with the letter B. This week your child will also learn about basic scissor skills. To review previous letters learned, your child will write the letters A and B in baby lotion. This unit is designed to last one week, depending on how often you teach language arts.

Prior Knowledge Required for This Unit (if any):

You will need the Alphabet Book and Alphabet Banner from the "Introduction to the Alphabet" unit.

Letter Activities:

In your alphabet book, write the letter B (capital and lowercase) on the next page. Have your child trace the letter with his or her finger. Talk about how the word butterfly starts with the letter B and find the letter B on the alphabet banner from the first alphabet unit. Sing this fun song with your child about the letter B.

Make a large letter B out of cardboard or cardstock. Have your child cover the letter B with blue buttons. Emphasize that the words blue and button begin with the letter B.

Make a large letter B on the floor with masking tape. Have your child bounce a ball along the letter B.

This week you will add the letter B to the alphabet book you have been creating each week.

Spread baby lotion on a cookie sheet and have your child write the letters A and B in it using his or her finger.
