Information About This Unit
Description of Learning Unit:
This unit covers the story, "The City Mouse and the Country Mouse," which you will read with your child. In addition, your child will be learning about basic nouns, as well as practicing with the sight words "this, too, and under." Your child will also explore his or her own world by doing a scavenger hunt in the kitchen and creating a "My Favorite Foods" book. This unit includes interactive games, craft projects, videos and interactive reading activities. The unit is designed to last one week, depending on how often you teach language arts.
List of Objectives:
- Read "The City Mouse and the Country Mouse."
- Explore reading comprehension skills through listening, reading and writing activities.
- Learn to recognize and understand basic nouns.
- Learn the following sight words: this, too, and under.
List of Materials and Supplies Needed for This Pathway:
- Basic printing supplies
- Crayons, colored pencils or markers
- Scissors
- Single hole punch
- Brads or yarn
- Crayons
- 1/4 Piece of grey or brown construction paper (or white paper colored or painted)
2 pink construction paper circles
2 paper reinforcements or wiggly eyes
1 tiny black or pink pompom (or bead or you can use marker to draw on a nose)
6" piece of black yarn
Hole punch
Scissors
Glue or glue stick
- 52 3 x 5 cards, or cardstock
Scissors or paper cutter
Glue or glue stick
Scavenger Hunt and My Favorite Foods Book:
- Ten or more pieces of paper that are the same size (8 ½ x 11 or smaller)
- Markers or crayons to draw with and/or pictures from old magazines or newspapers and glue
- Binder clip or yarn and hole puncher
Word Island Hopping Game (Site Words):
- Colored chalk
Stretch of pavement
Sight word flashcards
Stopwatch
